Chunky Hat and Mittens Instructions

Gauge: 2.25 sts. = 1" and 3.5 rows = 1"

Hat:
With #13 needle cast on 48 sts. and work in stockinette stitch for 6".

Decrease Row:
*K8, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K7, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K6, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K5, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K4, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K3, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K2, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K8, k2tog*, repeat to1end. Purl back.
*K1, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K8, k2tog*, repeat to end. Purl back.
*K2tog*, repeat to end.

Cut yarn leaving a 12" tail. Thread through the remaining stitches and draw up tight and secure. Use tail to sew.

Mittens:
With #11 needles cast on 23 sts. and work in 1x1 rib for 2.5 ".
Row 1-6: Change to larger needle and work in stockinette stitch.
Row 7: (RS) K10, increase in next 2 sts. K11. (25 sts)
Row 8 and all even rows: Purl all sts.
Row 9: K10, increase K2, increase K11 (27 sts)
Row 11: K10, increase, K4, increase K11 (29 sts)
Row 13: Knit.
Row 15: Knit 20 sts. Turn.
Row 16: Purl back 9 sts. Turn.
Row 17-20: Work in stockinette stitch.
Row 21: K1, *k2tog (repeat from *)(5 sts)
Row 22: P1, *p2tog (repeat from *)(3 sts)
Cut yarn and pull through remaining 3 sts. and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.

Reattach the yarn at the base of the thumb. Pick up 2 sts and knit to the end of the row. Purl back 22 sts. Continue in stockinette stitch until length from top of ribbing is at least 6". End with a WS row. K1, SSK, K6, K2tog, SSK, K6, K2tog, K1. Purl back. K1, SSK, K4, K2tog, SSK, K4, K2tog, K1. Purl back. K1, SSK, K2, K2tog, SSK, K2, K2tog, K1. Bind off. Sew side and fasten off.
